LANGUAGE CHANGE AND VARIATION IN BORNEO (MALAYSIA)
LANGUAGE CHANGE AND VARIATION IN BORNEO : MALAYSIA
We believe several principles can be suggested : 1) Clear distinction needs to be made between linguistic, ethnographic and sociopolitical use of terms; 2) Terms should be broad enough to include all those who are meant to be included, but not overaly inclusive; 3) people should not be included or excluded without their acknowledging membership in the group; 4) Group loyalty is not dependent upon a shared label, but label-sharing tends to come from group loyalty; 5) People generally react negatively if they are being subsumed into a group on an unequal basis, but they may readily shed their identity for a larger group identity if it is in their best interest; 6) where proposing new labels or a redefinitation of old ones, it is probably best to propose names to be reached before strongly promoting them.
